Volunteering With JCGS

There is a variety of volunteer opportunities with JCGS. The Society is dependent on volunteers as there is no paid staff. The expertise and dedication of the many volunteers contributing to the Society is greatly appreciated. There are standing committees and as well as special committees. Following are brief summaries:

  • Board members assist with various expertise and a willingness to make decisions for advancing the society’s mission and purposes. A dedicated board is critical for the society to function in an appropriate and organized manner. Those willing to contribute as a board member are vital to the society. (Elections are held in the spring for various positions.)
  • The Research Center is staffed by JCGS members. Members typically volunteer anywhere from one to four days assisting visitors with their research or maintaining various aspects of the organization (typically a three-hour shift).
  • Jefferson County records are abstracted to create the indexes available on the data website. The abstracting work done by volunteers can be done at the Research Center or at home.
  • The Records Collection Research Team compiles the cemetery records. They are dependent on volunteers to walk the cemeteries and document the information. Other records are also compiled—obituaries are one example.
  • Education Committee members are responsible for planning, promoting, and carrying out the monthly meeting presentations and the resource corners planning. The committee depends on members with Zoom expertise, promotional development experience, genealogical speaker contacts, and hospitality charisma!
  • The Society relies on a communications team to write and electronically publish the membership newsletter as well as the occasional email notices out to members.
  • The Library Committee oversees the vast selection of print and other research materials onsite. A Library database is maintained.
  • A Membership Committee is responsible for maintaining membership lists, newsletter subscriber lists, and the member-only FaceBook list. The Committee is also responsible for visioning and carrying out efforts to maintain current membership as well as inviting in new members.
  • The Society relies on a volunteer webmaster that has access to consultant services. Several additional volunteers assist with maintaining the website.
  • The entire membership contributes in building up the Society!
