2017 Beginning Genealogy Class

Genealogy: The Basics – an introduction to the basic concepts and tools used in family history research. Three consecutive Monday afternoons, February 13, 20 and 27, at the Research Center, from 1:00 to 3:30.  (Directions to the Research Center).

Jefferson County Genealogy Society is offering a new class, Genealogy: The Basics – an introduction to the basic concepts and tools used in family history research.  This three-session class is designed for the beginner — the person who hasn’t yet started, or has tried to get off the ground herself and doesn’t know how to best approach her research.

Class enrollment is limited to just 15 students. The class always fills so if you are interested be sure to get your registration in early. Registration Form (pdf). Registration is required before February 1, 2017.

The fee for the class is $30 for JCGS members $55 for non-members (this includes a one-year JCGS membership). The class will be limited to 15 students.

We will focus on researching in the United States, but basic concepts are transferable to researching anywhere in the world.  We’ll discuss census records and vital records to begin your research and introduce you to online sources (websites and search techniques) and finding research done by others.  Participants will also learn how to organize and maintain the data they obtain, both hard-copy and computerized formats.

A follow-up class on other useful resources (military, immigration, land and probate records) and problem-solving techniques will be offered in the fall of 2017.

Genealogy: The Basics will be held on three consecutive Monday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:30, on February 13, 20, and 27 at the Jefferson County Historical Society Research Center at 13692 Airport Cutoff Road (Highway 19), a few miles south of Port Townsend.
